Rotary in Nepal

Rotary movement started in Nepal in the year 1958 with the establishment of Rotary Club of Kathmandu which was inaugurated on November 20, 1958 B.S. Late King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev of Nepal. This was admitted into Rotary International on 13th of 1959 which was sponsored by Rotary Club Darvanga ( India) of Rotary International District 3250 (then 325).

Rotary Club of Biratnagar came into existence after 18 years, in the year 1977. After 1978 few more clubs were established and until 1995 there were only 10 clubs in Nepal. The visit of then Rotary International President Herbert Brown to Nepal in the year 1995 became a moral booster for Nepalese Rotarians the growth of Rotary in Nepal then after is significant . The growth percent of Rotary Clubs in 9 Years until Rotary year 2003/2004 was 660 while the growth of members during the same period was also around 600 percent.

Nepal now has 67 active clubs out of 71 admitted to Rotary International so far, having been involved in various community projects which include three major projects under 3H- Grant of the Rotary Foundation (TRF). The contribution to the Rotary Foundation by the Rotary Clubs in Nepal is also increasing year by year. The contribution to TRF from Nepal Clubs in the year 2005/2006 was above $115,000.

Due to increasing number of community based social service activities carried out by Rotary clubs and the successful eradication of Polio from the country, Rotary movement in Nepal is gaining popularity every day. It is more likely that Nepal will have at least 80 storong clubs within next five years time.
